Management Induction

Management Induction

This induction prepares managers and supervisors to fulfil their legal, operational and leadership responsibilities at a surface or underground coal mine. It explains how work must be planned, communicated, controlled and monitored so that every person can work safely and return home unharmed.

What You Will Learn

The programme covers eight connected areas of management responsibility.

 5.1 MHSA Legal Responsibilities

Understand the Mine Health and Safety Act, duty of care, reasonably practicable controls, competence requirements, workplace inspections, incident reporting and the duty to stop unsafe work.

 5.2 Section 16(2) Responsibilities

Understand formal written appointments, assigned duties, accountability, authority, competence, resources, reporting lines, escalation duties and the limits of an appointed person’s responsibility.

 5.3 Risk Governance

Apply baseline, issue-based and continuous risk assessments; use the hierarchy of controls; verify critical controls; monitor residual risk; manage change; and escalate risks that cannot be controlled.

 5.4 Contractor Governance

Control contractors throughout pre-qualification, appointment, mobilisation, work execution, performance review and demobilisation. Confirm scope, risk assessments, competence, permits, isolations, equipment, access and supervision before and during work.

 5.5 SHEQ Governance

Apply Safety, Health, Environment and Quality requirements during work planning and execution. Conduct inspections, report incidents and non-conformances, maintain accurate records and verify corrective actions.

5.6 Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Management

Prepare workers and contractors for emergencies, raise the alarm, evacuate safely, account for people, protect life, use emergency equipment correctly, support crisis communication and participate in drills and post-emergency reviews.

 5.7 Compliance, Audits and Inspections

Maintain legal and site compliance, inspect workplaces and equipment, support audits, identify non-conformances, assign corrective actions, verify close-out evidence and escalate serious or repeated failures.

 5.8 Leadership and Safety Culture

Lead by example, communicate clear expectations, listen to workers, encourage reporting, apply fair accountability, recognise safe behaviour, coach respectfully and ensure that production pressure never overrides health and safety controls.

By the End of this Induction

You will be equipped to plan and supervise work safely, understand and apply your legal appointment, manage operational and contractor risks, implement SHEQ requirements, respond effectively to emergencies, maintain compliance and lead a workplace culture in which people are placed before production.

Complete every section carefully and apply the requirements to your own area of responsibility.
